How to Avoid Visible Wallpaper Seams

You picked the wallpaper.
You imagined the vibe.
You’re halfway through installing and then… you see it.

A seam.

Before you spiral — take a breath. Visible seams happen, and most of the time they’re totally preventable (or fixable). Here’s what actually causes them and how to keep your walls looking smooth and seamless.

Why Do Wallpaper Seams Show Up?

Seams usually show when two panels don’t sit perfectly flush against each other. That can happen for a few reasons:

1. The Walls Weren’t Prepped Right

Wallpaper needs a smooth, clean surface to stick properly. Dust, leftover texture, old adhesive, or moisture can mess with adhesion and cause panels to separate slightly.

2. Installation Got a Little Rushed

If panels aren’t lined up carefully — or they’re not smoothed down firmly — tiny gaps can happen. Even the slightest misalignment may become noticeable after the adhesive fully dries.

3. You’re Working with a Dark or High-Contrast Design

Here’s something most people don’t realize: almost all wallpaper (including ours) is printed on a white base. So if you’re installing a deep green, navy, or black design, the white edges can peek through and look like seams — even when the panels are aligned correctly.

How to Keep Your Wallpaper Looking Flawless

Let’s avoid the drama from the start.

Prep Like You Mean It

Clean your walls. Remove dust. Make sure they’re fully dry.

We always recommend using a high-quality wallpaper primer — it creates a smooth surface and helps everything adhere evenly. This step makes a huge difference.

Slow Down When You Hang

Start at the top. Line it up carefully. Smooth as you go.

Use a smoothing tool to press out air bubbles and make sure the entire panel is fully adhered. A seam roller is especially helpful for pressing edges down securely.

It’s not a race. The slower you go, the better it looks.

Pro Tips for Dark Wallpapers

If you’re going bold (which we love), here are a few extra tricks:

Color the Edges

Because wallpaper is printed on white, darker designs can sometimes show a faint white line at the edges.

Easy fix: lightly color the edge of the roll with a matching crayon before installing. Black crayon for black wallpaper. Green for green. It helps everything blend beautifully.

Match Your Wall Color

If you’re putting dark wallpaper over bright white walls, even a tiny gap will stand out.

Using a tinted primer that’s closer to your wallpaper color can help camouflage any small imperfections. It doesn’t have to be exact — just closer than white.

Try “Banding”

This is a designer trick. Paint vertical stripes on your wall where the seams will land. That way, if there’s any tiny separation, it blends right in.

Perfect if you don’t want to repaint the whole wall.

Already Seeing Seams? Don’t Panic.

If your wallpaper is already up and you’re noticing a visible seam, you still have options.

One popular fix: watercolor pens. Apply gently along the seam and wipe away immediately. The pigment sticks to the wall and backing but not the wallpaper surface. Always test in a small hidden spot first before committing.
